Recycling News and Tidbits

A "Warm Your Neighbor" project by the Luther College Bookstore has resulted in the donation of 26 sweatshirts to the Depot Outlet.  The bookstore recently offered its customers a $10 discount on the purchase of a new sweatshirt if they brought in a "gently used" old sweatshirt for the Depot Outlet. "The Depot helps many, many people locally and we are proud to support them," said Luther Book Store coordinator Deanna Casterton.

Winneshiek County 4-Hers can enter a new category at this summer's 4-H Clothing Event. Participants must find outfits for $15 or less at garage sales, consignment stores or clothing resale stores such as the Depot Outlet.

They can model the outfits during Winneshiek County's Clothing Judging. A receipt will be required. Handwritten receipts would be accepted for garage sales. Iowa 4-H officials say the new competition was created to encourage recycling and the environmental movement. They're encouraging 4-Hers to consider look, fit and construction as well as whether the clothing is needed in their wardrobe.

"Regifting" is an idea that arises during and after the Christmas holidays, but is suitable for birthdays, anniversaries and other gift-giving holidays. Jerry Seinfeld, in his 1990s television comedy show, coined the word "regifting" -- giving away an unwanted gift previously received from someone else.  Pawning off an unwanted gift to a family member, friend or co-worker.  Depot Outlet puts another spin on "regifting".  If you receive a gift you intend to keep, then donate an older version of that item to Depot Outlet.  For example, if you  receive a new sweater for your birthday, then consider donating an older sweater to Depot Outlet to be recycled to another person.
